Phoenix Urban Lakes

Phoenix Lakes Catfish stockings resume September 22-27

CATFISH STOCKINGS TO START END OF SEPTEMBER After our summer season stocking break period, the Urban Fishing Program lakes in Maricopa County and Pima County are scheduled for catfish stockings to resume the week of September 22-27. With shorter daylight periods and cooler nighttime temperatures, lake temperatures are projected to drop below 82 degrees by the time the fish arrive at the end of September. Full stocking levels of 15-20 inch channel catfish have been ordered for delivery to all Urban Program Lakes. Lakes will be stocked at rates of 80-110 pounds of fish per acre with the smaller, popular lakes getting a higher number of fish per acre. Catfish will be trucked in and delivered once again from farm ponds in Arkansas. Every other week an average of over 12,000 pounds of catfish will be delivered to 17 Program lakes in Maricopa and Pima County. From September to early November there are four catfish stockings scheduled before the trout season begins.

9-3-03

Fishing success throughout the summer has been fair with some anglers catching catfish limits in August. The ratio of summer "hold-over" catfish is highest in the larger lakes (over 5 acres).

Top fishing lakes throughout the summer include Chaparral (in Scottsdale), Red Mountain (in Mesa), Kiwanis (in Tempe), Alvord (in Phoenix), and Silverbell and Kennedy lakes (in Tucson). Lakes will be restocked with channel catfish during the week of September 22-27. Fishing should be good to excellent for 15-20 inch catfish. Best baits should be stink baits and shrimp, followed by worms and hot dogs. Fishing is poor to fair for bluegill, hybrid sunfish and bass.

Try fishing the early mornings when lake temperatures are cool. Earthworms and mealworms on a small hook under a small bobber will keep you and the youngsters busy catching bluegill.

Fishing at Green Valley lakes (Payson) has been poor for bluegill and bass, but will pick up quickly after trout stockings resume the week of October 14-19.
